What’s on Durban? Nothing! Everything is cancelled, we knew it the moment we heard the words. “Fellow South African’s”. As we all understand the reality of COVID-19 and have lost friends and loved ones, we also understand the threat even a two-week lockdown has on restaurants and businesses alike. It is a hard blow for the hospitality and entertainment industries. There are a few online events taking place but nothing else to report on sadly! You can tell in my tone that I am disappointed and sad and there is a reason for that. This week I was reminded of what is truly important by the loss of a friend to COVID-19. That is our very lives.
A lot of restaurants are providing take away menus, drive through options and delivery options. Yet it still hits that industry really hard, not to mention the wait staff who rely on tips to survive.
I love supporting local musicians, after all, what would our world be without music? Think of them now too, unable to host or attend gigs.
Well done South Africa for doing your part in keeping this next wave at bay as best we can but can I also ask you to get creative and support your local restaurants, musicians and businesses.
A sad day for What’s on durban
We also lost an amazing woman this week, Shirley Swemmer to COVID sadly. She used to organise the best markets in Durban at Makaranga Lodge back in the day as well as at Cotswolds. Shirley was organising a Christmas in July event and a Culinary Market this year. They both got cancelled due to the lockdown, unfortunately. Shirley was one of the kindest and gracious people I have ever met. She was exceptional and organising events!. We are all deeply saddened at her loss.
I had a list of virtual events I was going to post to What’s on Durban today but I just decided this week needed a moment’s silence out of respect for Shirley and others like her and those they left behind. I had virtual events this week I forgot to log on at the right moments. As helpful as virtual is, It is just not the same as real connection. Next week on Whats’s on Durban, I will try to post some virtual events.
Is anyone else tired of zoom though? or is it just me? I am all zoomed out I will be honest!
