On November 6, 2024, MSC Euribia, the flagship vessel of MSC Cruises, made a scheduled technical stop at Durban’s Nelson Mandela Cruise Terminal. As one of the largest ships to dock at a South African port, MSC Euribia stands out for its state-of-the-art technology and innovative features.
Media and Travel partners were in attendance at the Maiden Call and crest exchange of MSC Euribia. Durban has been a safe harbour and detour for many cruise ships due to the trouble in the Red Sea.
What is the meaning of the name?
MSC Euribia is cleverly named after the mythological ancient goddess Eurybia. Eurybia harnessed the power of nature, by way of the winds, weather and constellations to master the seas. It’s a play on words emphasising the vision of the ship to master cutting-edge technology to minimise its impact on the precious marine ecosystem. It is almost like an offering to the goddess.
Environmentally friendly
Ross Volk, Managing Director of MSC Cruises South Africa, expressed his excitement over the ship’s visit, welcoming the MSC Euribia on her first call in South Africa. Durban’s Nelson Mandela Cruise Terminal is one of just two local ports capable of accommodating a vessel of this size.
The fifth Meraviglia-class ship in MSC Cruises fleet, MSC Euribia, is powered by (LNG) liquid natural gas. This is the second MSC ship to run on LNG, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 20% and significantly reduces local air pollution. Including 99% less sulphur oxides (SOx), 99% less particulate matter, and up to 85% less nitrogen oxides (NOx). This results in immediate environmental benefits for the environment.

Inside MSC Euribia’s Grand Design and Amenities
With a capacity of 6,334 people and 2,400 staterooms, the ship boasts a stunning 100-meter-long LED screen that spans the ceiling of its central internal promenade, making it the longest LED dome at sea. Some have ventured a guess that it is twice as large as the Titanic. But you will have to look that up. 🙂
Guests on MSC Euribia can enjoy 10 dining options, 21 bars, five pools that can accommodate over 1,000 people. Furthermore, the private MSC Yacht Club provides a luxurious experience replete with 24-hour butler service and improved privacy.
MSC Cruises remains committed to promoting the expansion of the South African cruise industry. This benefits both the national economy and local communities. Volk said, “This marks the start of our local cruise season, and we are pleased to welcome both experienced cruisers and first-timers aboard this summer”. MSC Musica will begin serving the South African market for the following season on November 22, 2024.
