I accidentally stumbled upon the leather shop Layed back Leather when I went with my husband to drop off one of his goongalicious cakes. I absolutely fell in love with the spot and all the gorgeous leather goods. Chatting to Brad, I found out that his mom is a friend of mine! I was intrigued as to how it all got started and how he has managed to keep it alive since 1994! It is an incredible legacy for a local brand to survive for 26 years.
Brad and I sending a photo to his mom! ha ha:-)
Tell us how it all started?
Layed back Leather was a dream I had 26 years ago literally in the night. The name, the venue, the product. I waitered at night for the first year and worked the shop by day ploughing everything back into it. I grew it from there, over the years adding more shops.
What leather suppliers do you currently have in your shop?
We keep brands that people know and ask for. Backup service and quality are the keys to maintaining returning customers. Brands such as Jekyll and Hide, Brando, Hannitan, Thandana and Nouveau are favourites. After 26 years your customers become your friends.
Tell us a little more about Mookins Bath products.
Mookins was birthed 6 years ago by my wife Mandy Moo, … Mookins. She was inspired by a school project for our daughter to make a bar of soap. It seemed to fill her love tank as it compared to baking cakes which she loves! (without the calories!) and because soap making is like baking the passion grew.
Please tell us a little bit about your family.
Father of 3 kids. Oldest daughter living in Austria au-pairing, travelling, studying Unisa and fashion forecasting for SA stores as international travel is banned for clothing buyers here in SA. My other 2 kids are still schooling. We live in Hillcrest.
What’s on special at Layed Back Leather?
We have just finished our 26th Birthday Sale which ran for the whole of Aug. I’m afraid no specials now but for the biggest range of leather handbags, purses, wallets and belts in Durban we are your destination. Also for sheepskin slippers always in hot demand.
Anything else to share with us?
Hey my favourite things to do, eating Goongalicious carrot cake/ turning junk into treasures/ meandering/ making friends with random strangers. The best part of my job is the buying… going with a quickening of my spirit is a successful buyer.

Hearing I am a thrift shopper fanatic, the owner Brad showed me the space he has rented out to Castaway Love and found beautiful pre-loved items. Have a browse through their online shop to see the wide range of products or visit them in-store if you are in the area. My friend and I are heading to the Hillcrest shop tomorrow morning so we might run into you there and let us do some shopping together!
It is good to find and all in one leather goods shop! I had my eyes on a few items in the store! I am needing a good quality leather bag and cant wait to get my hands on one! If you have been to their shop let us know of your experience and what amazing products you bought in the comments.
