South Africans looking for an affordable getaway closer to home have another reason to start planning. Sho’t Left Travel Week 2026 officially kicked off on 7 September, bringing a week of domestic travel deals and experiences as part of The Great South African Travel Sale.
Running from 7 to 13 September 2026, Travel Week is giving local travellers the opportunity to find value across South Africa while encouraging people to discover destinations, experiences, and tourism businesses they may not have considered before.
The initiative comes during Tourism Month, a time when the spotlight is firmly on the role of domestic tourism and the importance of getting South Africans travelling within their own country.
What is Sho’t Left Travel Week?
Sho’t Left Travel Week is a domestic tourism campaign designed to connect South African travellers with travel deals and experiences across the country.
The 2026 campaign forms part of The Great South African Travel Sale, with travellers able to book selected offers during Travel Week and travel at a later date, depending on the individual deal.
That flexibility could be particularly useful for households watching their budgets. Instead of committing to an expensive holiday immediately, travellers can look for a deal that fits their budget, secure it while the offer is available and plan their trip for a more convenient time.
Affordable South African travel is about more than holidays
Domestic travel does not necessarily mean booking a traditional week-long holiday.
For South Africans, a getaway could be a weekend break, road trip, family holiday, wellness escape, food experience, adventure, cultural outing or short stay somewhere close to home.
It can also be an opportunity to explore destinations that are often overlooked in favour of the country’s better-known tourist hotspots.
Smaller accommodation establishments, independent tourism operators and local experience providers all form part of South Africa’s tourism offering, giving travellers plenty of opportunities to discover something different.
As Mashoto Mokgethi, Hub Head of Domestic Tourism at South African Tourism, explains, people travel for very different reasons, from spending time with family to seeking adventure, food, culture, relaxation or simply discovering somewhere new.
That idea sits behind the campaign’s “1,000 Reasons to Sho’t Left” message: there is no single reason to travel, and no single way to experience South Africa.

Domestic tourism supports local businesses
The benefits of a domestic getaway extend beyond the traveller.
When someone books a stay at a family-run B&B, lodge or boutique hotel, their spending can filter through the wider local tourism economy. This can include restaurants, transport operators, tour guides, food producers, craft businesses, retailers and activity providers.
For micro, small and medium-sized tourism businesses, Travel Week also provides an opportunity to reach South Africans who are actively searching for travel deals and new experiences.
Tourism businesses can still participate by loading their Travel Week offers onto the Sho’t Left Partner Platform, helping their products become more visible to potential domestic travellers.
Why Travel Week is worth exploring
For travellers, the biggest opportunity is simple: compare the available deals and find something that works for both the budget and the occasion.
Travel stokvels and other group travel communities can also use the campaign to plan future trips and make collective travel budgets go further.
For people who do not travel frequently, Travel Week offers an opportunity to rethink what a holiday needs to look like.
You don’t necessarily need to fly somewhere or wait for the annual big holiday. A nearby weekend away, a road trip, a midweek escape or an experience in a neighbouring town can all become opportunities to explore more of South Africa.

Explore South Africa during Tourism Month
Sho’t Left Travel Week runs from 7 to 13 September 2026, giving South Africans a limited window to explore available domestic travel deals and start planning their next local getaway.
Whether you’re looking for a family holiday, a romantic escape, an adventure with friends or simply somewhere new to explore, there are plenty of reasons to Sho’t Left.
