Mark Young, respected media professional and consulting editor, is making a heartfelt and urgent plea for assistance. His daughter, Meghan, a 38-year-old woman living and working in Johannesburg, has recently been diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer.

Despite her dedication to her career and a life built on hard work, Meghan is now in a life-threatening situation, made worse by the failures of our medical system.

The Harsh Reality Behind the Diagnosis

Like many South Africans, Meghan’s medical aid lapsed during the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving her without coverage when she needed it most. When persistent abdominal pain worsened, she finally sought medical attention—only to receive the devastating news of cancer that has already spread to her liver.

The tumour in her colon is operable. However, time is critical. She is now experiencing liver pain, which strongly suggests that the disease is progressing. Without immediate surgical removal of the tumour and aggressive chemotherapy to treat the liver, Meghan’s chance of survival diminishes by the day.

Why She Needs Help

The public health system, though filled with committed professionals, is overwhelmed and under-resourced. Cancer is not officially regarded as a medical emergency, resulting in slow referrals and agonising delays.

The family has been told the best course of action is to go through Johannesburg General Hospital, the only state facility with an advanced oncology department. However, getting there through state channels is a bureaucratic nightmare and time is running out.

The alternative is private treatment, but the cost is staggering an estimated R300,000 (approx. US$15,000). Mark and his family have already raised R15,000 through donations and are turning to the public, charitable organisations, and corporate donors to help fund the urgent procedure.
